GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Four unanswered goals lifted the Allegheny College men's soccer team to an important 5-2 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Thiel College on Saturday night in Greenville, Pennsylvania.
As the Gators (8-7-4, 6-3-1 PAC) look to solidify their spot in the upcoming PAC Championship Tournament, they secured home-field advantage for the quarterfinal round by earning three points with Saturday's win. Allegheny currently sits in third place with 19 points and can finish no worse than fourth regardless of the outcome against fourth-place Saint Vincent College next Wednesday.
Thiel (4-12-1, 1-8-1 PAC) scored two of the game's first three goals and led 2-1 in the 16th minute, but junior midfielder
Will Gruca (Baden, Pa. Ambridge) converted a penalty kick in the 20th minute to even the score at 2-all.
Following the halftime intermission, the Gators wasted no time before taking the lead for good. Less than two minutes into the second half,
Arthur Every (Cranleigh, United Kingdom/Glebelands Secondary) rolled a pass through four Tomcats to
Cole Bowser (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll), who was left unmarked in front of the net for the go-ahead goal. Two-and-a-half minutes later,
Aidan Dyga (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) spun around a Thiel defender and rifled a right-footed shot past the keeper for added insurance.
In the 53rd minute, Every potted Allegheny's fourth unanswered goal after receiving a great pass from
Renen Frank (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman). Frank's through ball led Every past his defender and into the box, and the second-year midfielder was able to finish the play with a shot from about 10 yards out.
