OBERLIN, Ohio -- The Allegheny College field hockey team secured a hard-fought 2-1 double-overtime victory over Oberlin College in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) action on Saturday night.
Jamie Marchewka (Buffalo, N.Y./Amherst Central) found the back of the cage for the second time in the last three games and earned her second game-winning tally of the season after more than 74 minutes of action against the Yeowomen (4-8, 1-7 NCAC).
Caroline Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) set up the winner by working around one defender near the goal line and beating a second with a pass through their legs. Expecting the second-year midfielder to shoot, Oberlin goalie Janny McCormick stepped off of her line and committed to Smith, leaving Marchewka wide open in the center of the field.
After a scoreless first half,
Emily Robles (Burlington Township, N.J./Burlington Township) gave the Gators (4-9, 2-6 NCAC) a brief lead in the 35th minute. The Oberlin defense intercepted Smith's initial pass to Robles, but
Megan Seymour (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) grabbed the failed attempt to clear the ball. Seymour quickly centered the ball to Robles, who swung and lifted the ball over McCormick's head.
The 1-0 lead only lasted 4:22, as the Yeowomen responded to even the score at 1-all following a great series of passes in their attacking zone. But it was the only goal allowed by Allegheny goalie
Rowan O'Toole (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding), who needed two saves in the first overtime period to force the second extra session.
