STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- The Allegheny College women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 contest at Franciscan University on Wednesday night in a battle of two teams looking to secure their spots in the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) tournament.
Allegheny (5-6-5, 4-2-3 PAC) suffered just its second conference loss of the season, but the Gators remain one point ahead of Franciscan (5-8-2, 4-3-2 PAC) in the PAC standings. In sixth place, the Gators currently own the last spot in the PAC Championship Tournament, with the Barons on the outside looking in with two games to play.
Teaghan Elmore netted the game's only goal for Franciscan in the 26th minute. Elmore muscled through a tackle along the baseline, charged into the box, and ripped a shot into the upper near corner from just a few feet away from the goal line.
The majority of Allegheny's offensive chances also came in the first half. In the 16th minute, a corner kick ended with a similar shot from
Kylie Upton (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), but it was grabbed out of the air by goalie Callie Giguere. Two minutes before the Barons took the lead,
Delaney David (Cleveland, Ohio/Brooklyn) received a pass on a throw-in and rocketed the ball with her right foot, but it was also caught by Giguere by the near post. Inside the last five minutes of the opening half,
Emma Tikey (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville) lofted a shot towards the goal from just inside the sideline, but it too was saved.
