Women's Soccer Falls on the Road at Franciscan, 1-0

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- The Allegheny College women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 contest at Franciscan University on Wednesday night in a battle of two teams looking to secure their spots in the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) tournament.

Allegheny (5-6-5, 4-2-3 PAC) suffered just its second conference loss of the season, but the Gators remain one point ahead of Franciscan (5-8-2, 4-3-2 PAC) in the PAC standings. In sixth place, the Gators currently own the last spot in the PAC Championship Tournament, with the Barons on the outside looking in with two games to play.

Teaghan Elmore netted the game's only goal for Franciscan in the 26th minute. Elmore muscled through a tackle along the baseline, charged into the box, and ripped a shot into the upper near corner from just a few feet away from the goal line.

The majority of Allegheny's offensive chances also came in the first half. In the 16th minute, a corner kick ended with a similar shot from Kylie Upton (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), but it was grabbed out of the air by goalie Callie Giguere. Two minutes before the Barons took the lead, Delaney David (Cleveland, Ohio/Brooklyn) received a pass on a throw-in and rocketed the ball with her right foot, but it was also caught by Giguere by the near post. Inside the last five minutes of the opening half, Emma Tikey (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville) lofted a shot towards the goal from just inside the sideline, but it too was saved.

Inside the Box Score
  • Allegheny finished with more shots (8) and shots on goal (6).
  • The Barons took five shots, two of which were on target.
  • The Gators also held a slim lead in corners, 3-to-1.
  • Upton and Karley Johnson (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community) recorded a team-high two shots.
  • Alex Augustine (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) made one save in goal for the Gators.
  • Augustine's counterpart, Giguere, earned a clean sheet with six saves.

News and Notes
  • Allegheny falls to 5-7-5 overall and 4-2-3 against PAC opponents, but still ranks sixth in the PAC standings with two regular-season games to go.
  • Four of the team's seven losses this fall have come in 1-0 contests.
  • Augustine needs only three saves to become the first freshman keeper to reach 100 saves in a season since Maya Hackman '20 did so in 2017.

Up Next
The Gators will travel to Thiel College on Saturday, October 25, for a 5 p.m. showdown with the Tomcats.
