Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Limits OWU's High-Scoring Offense in 1-0 Loss

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College field hockey team put together a hard-fought 60 minutes despite a 1-0 loss to Ohio Wesleyan University in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) action on a cold Wednesday evening.

Allegheny (3-9, 1-6 NCAC) held the Battling Bishops (8-5, 6-1 NCAC) – who previously earned conference wins over the likes of Washington and Jefferson College and Transylvania University by identical 9-0 scores – to just a single goal. Although OWU's offense, which ranks second in the NCAC in scoring, finished with 20 shots and 13 penalty corners, the game's only goal came off a rebound that Grace Ammon put away in the third quarter.

Second-year goalie Rowan O'Toole (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) produced nine saves in the cage. O'Toole received plenty of help from the starting defensive trio of Bryce Watford (Parkville, Md./Eastern Technical), Rhyan Rish (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome), and Emily Jackson (Oreland, Pa./Springfield Township).

Of the few chances on the opposite end of the field, second-year midfielder Caroline Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) made a great individual effort and nearly tied the game late in the third quarter. Smith raced from midfield to the baseline and beat two defenders to the doorstep of the goal. She attempted to sneak the ball inside the near post, but her shot sailed wide.

Inside the Box Score
  • Ammon scored Ohio Wesleyan's only goal in the 36th minute.
  • The Battling Bishops finished the contest with more shots (20-to-3) and penalty corners (13-to-3).
  • Both teams combined for five green cards.
  • Smith, Rish, and Maddy Keenan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Trafford) each logged one shot for Allegheny.
  • O'Toole ended the night with nine saves, including five in the third quarter.
