Marchewka, Cucinell Score in Shutout Win at Transylvania

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Allegheny College field hockey team endured rainy conditions and held Transylvania University off the scoreboard in a 2-0 road victory Sunday in Lexington, Kentucky.

The Gators (3-8, 1-5 NCAC) secured their first North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) win of the season with their third shutout of the fall campaign. Allegheny limited the Pioneers (0-11, 0-7 NCAC) to just five shots, and Rowan O'Toole (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) needed only one save to earn the clean sheet.

Although the rain clouds opened in the first quarter, the Gators took a 1-0 lead near the end of the period when junior Jamie Marchewka (Buffalo, N.Y./Amherst Central) managed to poked the ball past Transylvania goalie Ruby Himes.

That proved to be the only goal of the afternoon until the early minutes of the fourth quarter. The play began with an excellent transition out of the defensive half of the field, as Marchewka fed the ball to Caroline Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) ahead of the Pioneer defense. Smith's initial shot headed toward the back post, and senior forward Eva Cucinell (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) redirected the ball into the cage.

Inside the Box Score
  • Allegheny was credited with eight shots, including seven shots on goal.
  • The Pioneers recorded five shots, but were held without an attempt for the entire second half.
