Field Hockey Falls in Shootout to Kenyon

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny field hockey team battled North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) foe Kenyon into a shootout Saturday (Oct. 11), but ultimately fell 2-1 following the extra periods.

Neither team was able to find a distinct advantage in the opening quarter as the game remained scoreless. Megan Seymour (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) had a shot on goal while Rowan O'Toole (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made a pair of stops.

O'Toole stopped a slew of shots in the second quarter before the Owls got on the board with less than five minutes remaining. That proved to be the only goal of the half as Allegheny entered the locker room trailing 1-0.

After putting the pressure on in the third, the Gators tied the game late in the frame. Off a penalty corner, Emily Jackson (Oreland, Pa./Springfield Township) sent a ball towards the net. Maddy Keenan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Trafford) got a stick on it and deflected it in, tying the game. The goal was Keenan's first of the season.

As the seconds ticked away in regulation, Kenyon had a shot to win, but O'Toole made a sprawling stop to send the game to overtime.

O'Toole made another pair of stops in the first overtime period as neither team scored in the first 10 minutes of extra time.

The Gators earned a penalty corner with no time left on the clock in the second overtime. Rhyan Rish (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) and Keenan had shots on goal, but the Kenyon goalie made a pair of stops as the game went to a shootout.

The Owls scored on their first attempt as Bryce Watford's (Parkville, Md./Eastern Technical) shot hit off the post. O'Toole made the save on the second attempt but once again, the Gators failed to convert. Kenyon grew their shootout advantage to 2-0, scoring on their third attempt. Allegheny missed their third while O'Toole stopped Kenyon's fourth attempt. The Gators had to score on their fourth attempt to stay alive but were unable to convert as Kenyon won the shootout 2-0 to take the game by a final score of 2-1.
