MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny volleyball team picked up a 3-0 sweep of Westminster Wednesday (Oct. 1) in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action.
The Gators won the sets 26-24, 25-21, 25-19.
After some back-and-forth to start, the Titans went on a run to take a 9-5 lead. The Gators quickly battled back to tie it at nine. The teams continued to trade runs until the Titans gained an 18-14 advantage. The score remained close as Allegheny staved off a set point to tie it at 24 late in the set. An ace by
Duru Akbas (Ankara, Turkey/Layton Christian Academy (Utah)) gave Allegheny their own set point. Following a timeout, a kill by
Sydney Kirk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) secured the set win, 26-24.
The momentum carried over for Allegheny as they opened the second set with a 9-3 lead. The Titans slowly chipped away at the lead, pulling within two points at 18-16. However, the Allegheny advantage never fell below two points as they took the second set 25-21.
The Gators gained another early lead in the third set. The Titans kept it close in the middle portion, but a 3-0 Gator run made it 16-11, leading to a Westminster timeout. After the timeout, the Titans pulled within two points. 19-17. The Gators responded by winning the next two points before Westminster called their final timeout. The timeout failed to stop the Gators as an ace by
Alejandra Fernandez (Caguas, Puerto Rico/Commonwealth-Parkville) capped off the win.
Inside the Box
- Kirk led the team with 10 kills while also recording three digs.
- Skyler Fatola (Queen Creek, Ariz./Eastmark) had eight kills with four digs and three block assists.
- Amaya Brooks (North Olmsted, Ohio/Lutheran West) tallied six kills.
- Carlee Pepperman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area) finished with 10 digs, five kills and four aces.
- Carly Beers (Warren, Pa./Warren) added five kills as well.
- Joanna Miller (Pittsburgh, Pa./Gateway) had 14 assists and five digs while Izzy Gray (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) had 11 assists and five digs.
- Jacy Diaz (Barranquitas, Puerto Rico/Gallatin (Tenn.)) led the backline with 18 digs.
- Akbas had six digs and a team-high five aces.
