Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

First-Place Waynesburg Clips Women's Soccer, 1-0

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- A late penalty kick proved to be the difference as the Allegheny College women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to first-place Waynesburg University on Wednesday night at the Robertson Athletic Complex.

One of three teams tied atop the Presidents' Athletic Conference standings, Waynesburg (8-1-1, 2-0-1 PAC) broke the scoreless stalemate in the 84th minute. After Julz Mohrbacher was tripped inside the box, Reagan Mittendorf stepped up and converted the penalty kick for the game's only goal.

In a contest that saw both teams combine for nearly 50 shot attempts, the Gators (2-6-3, 1-1-1 PAC) had several chances for a late equalizer. One of Allegheny's best scoring chances of the night came two minutes later, when midfielder Madeline Schneider (Poolesville, Md./Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart) ripped a right-footed shot from 30 yards out. Waynesburg keeper Lex Greenlief needed a perfectly-timed punch to knock the ball, which had its sights set for the upper right corner, just over the crossbar. On the following corner, Sydney Nichols (Fort Collins, Colo./Heritage Christian Academy) was able to direct the ball towards the cage from her spot on the back post, but Mohrbacher bailed out Greenlief with a save of her own.

Allegheny's last chance at a tying goal came off the foot of junior forward Casey Bender (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) in the 88th minute. After a hard foul knocked Delaney David (Cleveland, Ohio/Brooklyn) to the turf, Bender took the free kick, but Greenlief swallowed up her long-range shot.
