PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Allegheny women's basketball team traveled to Chatham Saturday (Jan. 25) for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest, defeating the Cougars 75-65 in a back-and-forth contest.
After some back-and-back play to start the game, the Gators rattled off a 10-0 run to take a 16-8 lead. The Gators continued to play well down the stretch as they took a 21-12 lead into the second.
The second quarter had a similar start to the first as the teams continued to match each other throughout the frame. The quarter ended with both teams netting 17 points as the Gators maintained their nine point lead, 38-29, at the half.
Emily Lauer (Knox, Pa./Keystone) scored 19 points in the opening half to lead the Gators.
Sarah Santicola (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) had 11 rebounds with eight points. The Gators shot 48.3% (14-29) in the opening 20 minutes with a 24-12 rebound advantage.
The back-and-forth theme of the game continued into the second half. Three pointers in the frame by
Bella Antonacci (Indiana, Pa./Indiana Area) and
Jess Bickart (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) helped the Gators outpace the Cougars 22-18 in the third as they owned a 60-47 heading into the final quarter.
Chatham started the fourth on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 62-55. The lead fell to six with three minutes to play, but a three by Lauer pushed the lead back to nine. In the final minute, the Gators hit a trio of free throws while not allowing a field goal to wrap up the conference win.
