BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Allegheny women's basketball team battled back in the fourth quarter to overcome a deficit and defeat Geneva 71-65 on the road in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play Wednesday (Jan. 29).
The Golden Tornadoes jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first. The lead grew to 11-5 before an Allegheny timeout. Coming out of the timeout,
Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) hit a three before a
Sarah Santicola (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) basket cut it to 11-10. Geneva responded with a 9-2 lead to push their advantage to 20-12. In the final 45 seconds of the quarter,
Emily Lauer (Knox, Pa./Keystone) had a pair of baskets to cut the lead to 20-16.
The Gators opened the second quarter on a 6-2 run, tying the game at 22 on a
Kate Leach (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) layup. The teams continued to trade baskets until the final three minutes of the half. Trailing 32-30, Allegheny finished the half on an 8-0 run as they gained a 38-32 advantage at halftime.
Lauer led the Gators with 13 points in the opening half. Santicola had ten to go with seven rebounds.
Jess Bickart (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) pulled in nine rebounds with five assists. The Gators shot 41% (16-39) and had a 28-18 rebound advantage.
Geneva tied the game at 41 early in the third quarter. After exchanging baskets, the Golden Tornadoes put together a 7-0 run to move ahead, 53-45. Allegheny ended the frame on a 6-2 run as they cut the deficit to 55-51 heading into the fourth.
Allegheny quickly tied the game at 55 in the final frame on a Santicola layup. After Geneva scored four straight to answer, the Gators went on a 7-0 run, capped off by a traditional three point play by
Ava Kobus (Pittsburgh, Pa./Norwin), taking a 62-59 lead. The Gators did not look back after that as they finished the game by outpacing their counterparts 9-6, capturing the PAC victory.

- Santicola recorded her 10th double-double of the season, finishing with 21 points and 13 rebounds.

- Bickart finished with a season-high 17 rebounds with seven assists and four points.
