ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The Allegheny College men's soccer team scored first in Saturday's non-conference match against the University of Mount Union, but it wasn't enough in an eventual 6-1 loss against the host Purple Raiders.
Darius Googe (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford) was the first striker to find the back of the net at Kehres Stadium, needing just over four minutes to give the Gators (0-3-0) a 1-0 advantage. After working down the left sideline with the ball, Googe cut back towards center field. As soon as the senior had enough space inside his defender, he rifled a shot towards the far corner of the net and beat a diving keeper for the early score.
Despite the early momentum, Googe's goal was the only shot Allegheny managed to put on goal against the Purple Raiders (2-1-0).
Brady Napoleon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) nearly gave the Gators a 2-0 advantage in the 12th minute, but his header rang off the far post and was cleared quickly by Mount Union. Just over a minute later, on the other end of the field, the Purple Raiders evened the score at 1-all.
Mount Union added two more to the scoreboard in the first half with markers in the 22nd and 28th minutes, both from Dom Kustura. The Purple Raiders scored thrice more in the second half, all while holding Allegheny to a single second-half shot.
