Volleyball Suffers Setback Against Earlham

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Allegheny volleyball team suffered their first setback of the season as they fell to Earlham in five sets Friday (Sept. 6).
 
The Quakers won the sets 21-25, 25-18, 24-26, 25-19, 15-13.
 
Earlham led early in the opening set but the Gators fought back to tie the match. After trading leads back-and-forth, the Quakers went on a 3-0 run to move ahead, 16-14. The Gators responded in a big way, answering with a 5-0 run to take a 19-16 lead. That advantage grew to as much as five as they captured the first set 25-21.
 
The Quakers went on a run midway through the second set to pull ahead, 15-11. The Gators brought the set within a couple points but ultimately dropped the set 25-18.
 
Earlham's momentum carried over to the third set as they led by as much as six early on. The Gators, however, stormed back and tied the set at 16 apiece. The teams exchanged points until they were knotted at 24. A kill by Dagney Javes (Frederick, Colo./Dawson School) gave the Gators a set point before an attack error wrapped it up, 26-24.
 
The Gators led early on in the fourth set but the Quakers utilized a 5-1 run to take the lead, 11-10. After some back-and-forth, Earlham went on another run, this time 7-1, as they won the fourth set 25-19, forcing a deciding fifth set.
 
Earlham jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the fifth set. The Gators came back, eventually tying it up at 12. However, the Quakers closed on a 3-1 run as the Gators suffered their first set back of the season.
 
Inside the Box
  • Javes led the Gators with 14 kills with three blocks.
  • Carlee Pepperman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area) had a 15 dig, 12 kill game.
  • Angelee Bawek (Goodyear, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) had nine kills while Sydney Kirk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) had eight.
  • Izzy Gray (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) had 20 assists and eight digs while Meagan Robare (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) had 17 assists.
  • Jacy Diaz (Barranquitas, Puerto Rico/Gallatin (Tenn.)) led the team with 25 digs.
  • Alejandra Fernandez (Caguas, Puerto Rico/Commonwealth Parkville) had 15 digs while Duru Akbas (Ankara, Turkey/Layton Christian Academy ((Utah)) had 14. 
News and Notes
  • The Gators are now 22-6 all-time against Earlham.
  • This marked the fourth five-set match of the season for Allegheny.

The Gators play two more contests at Case Western Reserve Saturday (Sept. 7), taking on the hosts as well as Mount Union.
