MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College women's soccer team delighted the fans in attendance on Wednesday night with a 3-1 victory over Baldwin Wallace University in its 2024 home opener.
The win was Allegheny's (1-2-0) first of the young season, while the Gators snapped a two-game win streak for the visiting Yellow Jackets (2-1-0). The three goals netted by the Blue and Gold marked the first tallies surrendered by Baldwin Wallace this season after the Yellow Jackets began the fall with consecutive shutouts.
Emma Miller (Elyria, Ohio/Lake Ridge Academy) played a significant role in the victory. The senior striker had a hand in every Allegheny goal, as she produced a career-high five points with two goals and one assist. Both of Miller's goals resulted from key takeaways in the attacking half of the field.
In the 49th minute,
Katherine Surdykowski (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington County Regional) intercepted a pass and quickly fed Miller with a well-placed pass as she crashed into the box. Less than six minutes later, Miller created her own scoring opportunity by stripping a Baldwin Wallace defender, creating space for a shot from the left side, and beating the keeper just inside the near post.
Allegheny's initial goal in the 23rd minute came off a patented Miller throw-in, leading to a strike by first-year midfielder
Madeline Schneider (Poolesville, Md./Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart).
In the 82nd minute, Baldwin Wallace found luck on a late corner kick. The marker spoiled Allegheny's clean sheet, but it was too little, too late.
