Gators Suffer Setback Against Wittenberg

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny field hockey team hosted Wittenberg in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) action Sunday (Sept. 28), falling to the Tigers 3-0.

The teams were evenly matched in the opening frame. The Tigers had a slight edge in corners and shots on goal, but neither side was able to find the back of the net.

The Tigers cracked the scoreboard early in the second quarter. Off a penalty corner, Wittenberg deflected in a shot in front of the net. In the closing minute of the half, the Tigers once again scored off a penalty corner opportunity as they took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Caroline Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) had a pair of opportunities early in the third quarter, but both shots on goal were saved. Once more, the Tigers scored off a penalty corner midway through the third to increase their lead to 3-0.

Wittenberg earned a penalty stroke in the first minute of the fourth, but Rowan O'Toole (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made the kick save on the low shot.

The Gators played tough the rest of the way but were unable to make up the goals as they dropped their first conference game of the season.
