Women's Soccer Starts PAC Slate With 3-1 Victory at Chatham

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Allegheny College women's soccer team kicked off its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) schedule with a 3-1 victory over Chatham University on the Cougars' Graham Field Wednesday night.

With the win, Allegheny (5-4-0, 1-0-0 PAC) extended its win streak to four consecutive games and climbed above the .500 mark for the first time this season. It's the team's longest win streak since October of 2019, and the Gators opened conference play with a win for the third time in as many seasons.

The Gators and Cougars (5-4-0, 0-1-0 PAC) scored early and carried a 1-1 tie into the locker room at the intermission. But despite conceding more shots (5-to-4) and corners (2-to-0) in the second half, the Allegheny defense held Chatham off the scoreboard while the offense went to work in the 47th and 66th minutes.

The winning goal came from none other than star senior Emma Miller (Elyria, Ohio/Lake Ridge Academy). The standout striker, who ranks among national leaders in Division III in scoring, added her 13th of the year and third consecutive game-winner 98 seconds after the halftime break. After receiving a cross from the right wing, Miller boxed out her defender and rifled a right-footed shot bar-down from the top of the six-yard box.

The insurance goal began with a free kick from about 50 yards out by defender Kylie Upton (Carmel, Ind./Carmel). Just moments after subbing back into the contest, Avarie Schott (San Antonio, Texas/Louis D. Brandeis) received the set piece and flicked the ball forward to Katherine Surdykowski (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington County Regional), who finished from atop the penalty area despite being knocked to the ground by a defending Cougar.

Inside the Box
  • The Gators ended the contest with more shots (13-to-10) and shots on goal (7-to-6).
  • Chatham, on the other hand, finished with more corner kicks (4-to-2).
  • Delaney David (Cleveland, Ohio/Brooklyn) netted Allegheny's first goal in the eighth minute.
  • Miller scored the eventual game-winner in the 47th minute.
  • Surdykowski, who assisted on the game's first marker, scored in the 66th minute.
  • Keeper Madison Lemanski (Bear, Del./Delaware Military Academy) made three of her four saves in the second half.
  • Leah Brockett (Delmont, Pa./Franklin Regional) added a team save off a Chatham corner kick a minute after Surdykowski's goal.
  • Ainsley Smith netted Chatham's lone tally in the 15th minute.

News and Notes
  • Allegheny jumped above .500 with a 5-4-0 overall record.
  • In three seasons as a member of the PAC, the Gators are 3-0-0 in conference openers.
  • Allegheny's four-game win streak is its longest since the 2019 season.
  • The Gators have won two in a row against the Cougars and now lead the all-time series 3-2-0.
  • Miller has scored a goal in four consecutive games, including the game-winning goal in the last three contests.
  • Miller's 13 goals on the season are the most by a Gator since Jane Och had 13 in 21 games in the fall of 2000.
