MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College women's tennis team kicked off the fall season by hosting the Allegheny Invitational at the Robertson Athletic Complex on Sunday.
Originally scheduled to be a two-day tournament, forecasted thunderstorms on Saturday shortened the event to just one round. Throughout the 12-hour day, the Allegheny women played 27 matches against Division I Mercyhurst University, Division II teams from Walsh University and PennWest Edinboro, and D-III opponents from Baldwin Wallace University and Oberlin College.
In total, the Gators combined for 10 singles wins and six more victories in doubles action.
One of only two Gators to play multiple singles matches,
Mackenzie Burd (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) defeated her opponent from Oberlin, 6-1, 6-2. Other notable singles wins came from
Julia Müsseler (Munich, Germany/Käthe-Kollwitz-Gymnasium) and
Nicole Serna Cassan (Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico/Grandview Preparatory (Fla.)), as both first-year players earned tiebreak wins over D-II opponents.
Rebecca McIntosh (Eighty Four, Pa./Ringgold) and
Athena Drollas (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) both went 2-0 in doubles action, including a 6-4 win as a tandem against Gillian Brown and Samantha Thielen of Baldwin Wallace.
