MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College men's soccer team snapped a four-game losing streak on a sunny Tuesday afternoon at the Robertson Athletic Complex with a 2-2 draw against SUNY Geneseo.
Facing the Knights (1-0-1) for the first time in program history, the Gators (0-4-1) scored first in the 35th minute but were forced to rally for the equalizer in the late stages of the non-conference contest.
The game's first goal came off the foot of
Will Gruca (Baden, Pa./Ambridge). The play began from the back line, as goalkeeper
Cadan Bennett (Bowling Green, Ohio/Maumee Valley Country Day) cleared the ball with a long pass to
Cam Kaminski (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) at the midfield stripe. Kaminski carried the ball deep into the attacking zone and found Gruca at the top of the box. After a quick touch to shake off a defender, Gruca fired a right-footed shot into the net.
SUNY Geneseo wasted little time before tying the game at 1-all. In the 37th minute, the Knights received a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. The first shot rang off the right post, but Eric Famularo was there to tap in the rebound. In the second half, the Knights took a 2-1 lead on an Ali Shabani tally in the 57th minute.
With just under five minutes left, three Gators had scoring opportunities. Following a Gruca free kick that pinballed off both posts,
Aidan Dyga (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and Kaminski each had a touch right on the goal line. To their dismay, neither broke the plane, as Geneseo keeper Vincent Maronski managed to save both.
The tying goal, scored at 87:06, also began with a Gruca free kick. This one was much deeper - taken from the midline - and his lengthy service into the penalty area was headed in by the 6-foot-3
Brady Napoleon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon).
