Gators Close Great Lakes Cross Over at 4-0

SANDUSKY, Ohio – The Allegheny volleyball team concluded their opening weekend at the Great Lakes Crossover Saturday (Aug. 31), collecting wins against LeTourneau and Manchester.
 
With the two wins, the Gators started the season 4-0 for the first time since 1988.
 
Game One - Allegheny 3, LeTourneau 2 (20-25, 26-24, 17-25, 25-21, 16-14)
 
The Yellowjackets went on a run midway through the opening set which led to a 19-8 lead. The Gators stormed back with a 9-2 run to cut the lead to 21-17. However, LeTourneau was able to close out the set, 25-20.
 
The teams went back-and-forth in the second set, finding themselves tied at 21. LeTourneau earned a match point at 24-22 after a 3-1 run. Allegheny staved off a pair of match points to tie the set at 24. Knotted at 24, a pair of Yellowjacket errors gave the Gators a 26-24 set win.
 
Once again, the teams matched points throughout the early portions of the third set and were tied 14. However, LeTourneau would end the set on an 11-3 run to move ahead, 2-1.
 
In the fourth set, neither team found a distinct advantage until late. This time tied at 21 apiece, the Gators won the ensuing four points to force a deciding fifth set.
 
In the final set, LeTourneau opened up with a 7-3 lead, but following a timeout, the Gators scored four straight points to tie the set. The Yellowjackets called a timeout but the Allegheny momentum carried on, increasing the run to 7-0 before the Yellowjackets got back on the board. LeTourneau would tie the set at 13 before earning a match point. A kill by Angelee Bawek (Goodyear, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) tied it back up at 14. After a Yellowjacket error, a kill by Carly Beers (Warren, Pa./Warren) gave the Gators their third straight five set win to start the season.
 
Inside the Box
  • Bawek led the Gators with a career-high 25 kills.
  • Dagney Javes (Frederick, Colo./Dawson School) had 15 kills while Carlee Pepperman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area) had a dozen. Pepperman also had 15 digs and two aces.
  • Izzy Gray (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) had 29 assists with 11 digs while Meagan Robare (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) had 25 assists.
  • Jacy Diaz (Barranquitas, Puerto Rico/Gallatin (Tenn.)) had 25 digs to lead the team. She also had a pair of aces.
  • Alejandra Fernandez (Caguas, Puerto Rico/Commonwealth Parkville) had 18 digs with four aces.
  • Duru Akbas (Ankara, Turkey/Layton Christian Academy ((Utah)) had 11 digs.
  • Sydney Kirk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) had two aces. 
Game Two - Allegheny, Manchester (25-21, 25-20, 25-20)
 
After Allegheny took an early lead, however, Manchester jumped ahead 11-8. The Gators slowly chipped away at the lead tying the game at 18. After tying the set, Allegheny went on to win seven of the next 10 points to take the set, 25-21.
 
The Gators got out of the gates fast in set two, amassing a 12-5 lead. After the lead stretched to eight, Manchester fought back to make it a 20-19 game. The Gators responded with a 6-1 run to close out the set. 
 
Allegheny gained the early advantage in set three. Manchester tied the set at seven but Allegheny answered with a 3-0 run to reestablish control. The Gators rode that lead the rest of the way, picking up a 25-20 set victory, earning their fourth straight win to start the season.
 
Inside the Box
  • Once again, Bawek led the team with 14 kills with two aces.
  • Javes had eight kills while Beers had seven.
  • Gray had 16 assists while Robare had 14.
  • Diaz had 14 digs.
  • Pepperman added 10 digs. 
News and Notes
  • Today's game was the Gators first against LeTourneau.
  • Allegheny is now 4-0 all-time against Manchester.
  • This is the team's first 4-0 start since 1988. 
Up Next
The Gators will face Earlham in a neutral site game next Friday (Sept. 6), hosted by Case Western Reserve.
