Gators Sweep Chatham in Home Opener

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny softball team celebrated their Hall of Game and home opener with a sweep of Chatham in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play Saturday (April 6).

The Gators won game one 9-1 in six innings and game two 10-8.

The first pitch was thrown by recent Allegheny Hall of Famer Nancy Nelson Mates as several softball Hall of Famers and alumni were present at the game.

Game One - Allegheny 9, Chatham 1 (6 innings)

In the first, back-to-back singles by Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and a walk to Sophia Godzak (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) loaded the bases with two outs, but Chatham got out of the jam unscathed.

Audrey Blarr (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) and Cameron Long (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) had singles in the second, but once again, Chatham got out of the inning without allowing a run.

The Gators cracked the scoreboard in the third. Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) singled before Godzak doubled to right center, bringing Genareo all the way around for the game's first run.

Phillips and Olivia Devries (Kent, Ohio/Field) singled in the fifth inning to put two runners on for Genareo. Genareo followed up with a home run to dead center, extending the lead to 4-0. The home run was her second of the season and eighth of her career.

The Cougars made up some ground in the sixth, plating a run on three hits.

Phillips doubled in the bottom of the sixth with one out. After Devries singled, Phillips scored on a wild pitch. Genareo then homered for the second time, this time to left field, to extend the lead to 7-1.

The inning continued as Godzak singled. Julia Perillo (Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) pinch ran for her. After Halle Book (Wexford, Pa./North Catholic) walked, Blarr hit an RBI single. The game then ended as Long drove home the final run, ending the game in six innings.

Game Two - Allegheny 10, Chatham 8

Chatham got out to a fast start, scoring twice in the first.

Belardinelli reached on an error to lead-off the bottom of the first before Phillips singled to put two runners on. The Gators hit into a double play to get the lead runners out, but Genareo kept the inning going with an RBI single, scoring Devries to cut the lead in half. After Book was walked to load the bases, Hadley Horensky (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) followed up with a two RBI single to right which scored both Genareo and Godzak.

In the second with Phillips and Devries aboard, Godzak singled to left field, scoring Phillips from second. However, the Cougars tied the game back up with a two-run home run in the top of the third. In the fourth, they added one more to retake the lead.

Belardinelli and Phillips hit back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the fourth. After a flyout moved the runners up, an error allowed Belardinelli to score before a Godzak single plated Phillips and gave the Gators a 6-5 lead.

Long doubled to begin the fifth. After moving up on a wild pitch, Phillips drove her in to extend the lead to 7-5. With two runners on later in the inning, Genareo smacked a double off the right field fence as the lead grew to 9-5.

Chatham responded in the sixth with a three-run home run to bring the score within one run.

Blarr singled through the left side in the bottom of the sixth before Long reached on an error. A single by Belardinelli scored Blarr and took the lead back to two runs.
