Bats Shine as Gators Sweep Yellow Jackets

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny softball team collected a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) sweep against Waynesburg at home Wednesday (April 24).

The Gators won game one 7-0 and game two by a 7-2 margin.

Game One - Allegheny 7, Waynesburg 0

After Aleya Belardinelli (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) struck out the side in the top of the inning, the Gators produced three runs in the bottom of the frame. Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) was hit by a pitch to start the frame. Later in the inning, Sophia Godzak (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) reached on an error. Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) then stepped up to the plate and hit the ball over the center field fence to give Allegheny a 3-0 lead. That home run was Genareo's fourth of the season and 10th of her career.

The Gators added another in the second. The bases were loaded when Olivia Devries (Kent, Ohio/Field) was hit by a pitch, scoring Cameron Long (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) to extend the lead to 4-0.

In the fourth, the Gators loaded the bases with singles by Long and Phillips and a fielder's choice by Belardinelli where Long beat the throw to third. Devries followed up with a chopper up the middle, scoring Long and Phillips. An error loaded the bases again. Hadley Horensky (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) hit a sacrifice fly to bring Belardinelli home as the lead hit 7-0.

Horensky then doubled down the right field line, bringing Genareo in as the Gators gained a 3-2 lead.

The Gators added to their lead in the third. After a Belardinelli single, Devries reached on an error, then a throwing error got her to third and allowed Belardinelli to score.
