Men's Tennis Wins 2023 PAC Championship Rematch vs. Grove City, 7-2

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- In a rematch of the 2023 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) championship, the Allegheny College men's tennis team defeated Grove City College, 7-2, at the Robertson Athletic Complex on Wednesday.

Light rain earlier in the afternoon delayed the start of the match, but the Gators (9-5, 4-0 PAC) shone under the lights on the home court against their top conference rival. The win extended Allegheny's win streak to four in a row, while the Wolverines (7-4, 2-1 PAC) suffered their first PAC loss of the spring.

The Blue and Gold began the match with a 2-1 advantage after winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. On the second doubles court, the team of Will Jarvie (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) and Benedek Kaibas (Salgótarján, Hungary/Mikszáth Kálmán Gimnázium) battled to a tiebreak and were able to knock off the Grove City duo of Jameson Sposato and Gavin Miller, 8-7 (2).

Allegheny quickly clinched the match by winning the first three singles contests. Anton Hedlund (Hovas, Sweden/Katrinelundsgymnasiet) and David Rodriguez (St. Ann's, Trinidad & Tobago/Fatima College) wasted little time securing their wins at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Hedlund handed Grove City's Benjamin Jones just his second loss of the season with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Rodriguez defeated Gavin Miller on the second court, 6-3, 6-3.

Kaibas swept his opponent, 6-4, 6-4, for Allegheny's fifth point of the night to clinch the win.

The longest bout was between Guillaume Emiliano Loinard-Gonzalez (Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico/Universidad Jefferson Morelia) and Jose Pablo Leon at sixth singles. Not only did they play a full third set, they needed a tiebreak to decide a winner, and even the seven-point tiebreaker required overtime. After dropping the first set, Loinard-Gonzalez, in his first PAC singles match of the spring, rallied all the way back and claimed the tiebreaker, 9-7.
