ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Allegheny College women's tennis team wrapped up its spring break trip in the Sunshine State with matches against Division II Cedarville University and Spring Arbor University of the NAIA.
The Gators (10-7) won all three doubles matches against the D-II Yellow Jackets (11-4), but dropped a 6-1 decision to Cedarville. Spring Arbor (17-5) swept all seven points from Allegheny in the late contest, which was played inside the United States Tennis Association's (UTSA) National Campus in Orlando.
Cedarville 6, Allegheny 1
The Gators won all three doubles matches, but according to Division II scoring rules, they only earned one point toward the final score. Unlike Division III, Divisions I and II, plus the NAIA, credit only one point to the team that wins at least two out of the three doubles matches.
Head coach
Dave Hayden mixed up the doubles lineup against the Yellow Jackets. For all three duos, Thursday's wins were their first together. At the top of the lineup,
Emiliia Grydnieva (Kyiv, Ukraine/Optima) and
Sabrina Rodriguez (Kissimmee, Fla./Professional and Technical) teamed up for the second time over the spring break trip and won 6-4.
Allison Riley (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) and
Sydney O'Connell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) posted an identical score as the No. 3 tandem.
Rei Etsumi (Honolulu, Hawaii/President William McKinley) and
Maria Lounder (Pittsburgh, Pa./Moon Area) only dropped two games in the No. 2 spot.
Spring Arbor 7, Allegheny 0
The closest Allegheny came to earning a win over the Cougars was the No. 2 singles match. For the second time this season, senior
Jean-Arlette Legrand (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Commonwealth Parkville School) battled into a super tiebreak set. She rebounded from a first-set loss to beat Victoria Herrington in the second, 6-4. In the 10-point tiebreaker, Herrington rallied for a narrow 10-7 triumph.
