ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Allegheny College men's tennis team faced a tall task against opponents from Division II and the NAIA to conclude its spring break trip on Thursday.
The Gators came up short against Cedarville University and Spring Arbor University. Cedarville (9-6), a Division II member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), won the opening match, 6-1. The Cougars (7-12) from Spring Arbor, affiliates of the NAIA's Crossroads League, came out on top in the nightcap, 4-3.
Anton Hedlund (Hovas, Sweden/Katrinelundsgymnasiet) was a bright spot for the Gators (5-4). The Swedish sensation was unbeaten on the day, going a combined 4-0 at No. 1 singles and doubles.
Cedarville 6, Allegheny 1
In the first contest of the day, the Gators dropped a 6-1 decision to the Division II Yellow Jackets.
Both of Allegheny's victories came in the No. 1 spot. Hedlund and
David Rodriguez (St. Ann's, Trinidad & Tobago/Fatima College) fought hard to beat Nathan Brumbaugh and Abraham Hougland. Tied at 6-6, Hedlund and Rodriguez captured the tiebreaker, 7-4, to secure the win.
Hedland was responsible for Allegheny's only singles win as well. He defeated Cedarville's top player, Nathan Hollis, with scores of 6-1 and 6-4.
Spring Arbor 4, Allegheny 3
By Division III scoring rules, Allegheny would have beaten the Cougars 5-4. However, the match utilized the same scoring rules as Division II, meaning the three double wins only counted as one point towards the final score.
Hedlund and Rodriguez blanked their opponents, 6-0.
Will Jarvie (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) and
Benedek Kaibas (Salgótarján, Hungary/Mikszáth Kálmán Gimnázium) defeated SAU's second duo, 6-3. Lastly,
Evan Nelson (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) and
Guillaume Emiliano Loinard-Gonzalez (Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico/Universidad Jefferson Morelia) edged the No. 3 duo, 6-4, to complete the doubles sweep.
The Gators also won the first and sixth singles matches. Hedlund dropped only two games in his victory over Jaume Riera Galindo in the No. 1 contest.
Mitchell Curtis (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) was the victor in the sixth spot, earning a 6-3, 6-2 win.
