NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Allegheny softball team opened up Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on the road at Westminster Thursday (March 28), splitting a pair of games.
The Gators won game one 10-0 before falling in game two 4-3.
Game One - Allegheny 10, Westminster 0 (5 innings)
The Gators got out of the gates fast as
Aleya Belardinelli (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore),
Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and
Olivia Devries (Kent, Ohio/Field) hit three straight singles to start the contest. Devries single drove in Belardinelli as the Gators gained a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the frame, Belardinelli struck out the side.
The second inning started in a similar fashion.
Hadley Horensky (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) and
Audrey Blarr (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) hit back-to-back doubles to increase the lead to 2-0.
Halle Book (Wexford, Pa./North Catholic) followed up with a single. After an out, Phillips hit an RBI single to plate Blarr. Devries was hit by a pitch to load the bases for
Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central), who singled to bring Book home.
Sophia Godzak (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) kept the rally going with a RBI single to center, making it 5-0. Devries would score the final run of the inning off a wild pitch as Allegheny increased their lead to 6-0.
Yet again, the Gators had three straight hits to start the third. Blarr, Book and Belardinelli all tallied their second hits and Belardinelli plated Blarr. Phillips reached on an error which allowed Book to score. A double steal brought Belardinelli home as the lead reached 9-0.
In the fourth, Horensky hit her second double of the contest. Horensky would cross the plate on an error later in the inning to make it 10-0.
The Gators kept that lead heading into the bottom of the fifth as Belardinelli had another 1-2-3 inning for the win.
Inside the Box
- Bellardinelli earned the win in the circle, her fourth of the season. In 5.0 innings of work, she allowed just one hit with no walks while striking out six. At the plate, she had a pair of hits and runs scored while driving home a run.
- Phillips had a team-high three hits, including a double, with a run scored and an RBI.
- Horensky doubled twice with two runs scored.
- Blarr and Book had two runs and two hits apiece.
- Eight Gators had hits while six drove runs in.
- Allegheny tallied 14 hits.
Game Two - Westminster 4, Allegheny 3
After a scoreless first inning, the Gators put up two runs in the second. Singles by Book, Horensky and Blarr loaded the bases. Belardinelli and Phillips then hit RBI singles to make it 2-0. However, the Titans made up a run in the bottom of the frame before tying it in the third.
The game remained tied until the fifth. Genareo hit a one-out single and
Arianna Wilkinson (Warren, Ohio/Howland) pinch ran for her. Later in the inning, Book doubled to right center as Wilkinson came across the plate to push the Gators ahead. In the bottom of the frame, the Titans hit a two-run double to take a 4-3 lead.
That lead held the rest of the way as the Gators split their conference opening series.
