GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Allegheny softball team dropped a nonconference twinbill at Denison Sunday afternoon (March 24) in Ohio.
Denison won game one 6-1 and game two 2-1.
Game One - Denison 6, Allegheny 1
The game was scoreless until the Gators broke the stalemate in the fourth.
Olivia Devries (Kent, Ohio/Field) had a lead-off single before
Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) doubled to send her to third.
Sophia Godzak (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) followed up by hitting into an error, which allowed Devries to score.
However, the Big Red would put up four runs in the bottom of the frame and would add two more in the fifth inning.
The score remained that way the rest of game one as the Big Red collected a 6-1 win.
Inside the Box
- Genareo had a double to help set up the Gator run.
- Devries scored the lone run for the Gators after reaching on a single.
- Audrey Blarr (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) and Aleya Belardinelli (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) also singled.
- Belardinelli struck out ten batters.
- Madison Hulse (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) made an appearance in relief, striking out one.
Game Two - Denison 2, Allegheny 1
Denison took an early lead in game two, hitting a pair of doubles in the opening frame to score a run.
The game remained 1-0 until the sixth inning. Belardinelli started the inning with a single. After a
Halle Book (Wexford, Pa./North Catholic) sacrifice bunt and a Denison error, the Gators had runners on the corners. Godzak came through with a two-out single to plate Belardinelli and tie the game at one.
However, the Big Red scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the frame. After a two-out single, a wild pitch and another single brought home the final run of the game, as Allegheny was unable to make the run in the seventh.
Inside the Box
- Godzak had a RBI single.
- Belardinelli had a hit and scored the Gators' run.
- Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and Genareo also singled.
- Samantha Dzierba (Colden, N.Y./Orchard Park) allowed just five hits in the loss.
