MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny men's lacrosse team hosted Mount Union in their 2024 home opener Wednesday (Feb. 28), defeating the Raiders 10-6.
After trailing 5-3 at the half, the Gators allowed just one second half goal en route to the win. The win also marked the first at Allegheny for first year head coach
Jeff Roberts.
During the game,
Aidan D'Amato (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) also tallied his 100th career point.
After the Raiders scored the game's first goal, Allegheny answered with a goal by
Jack Cushwa (Martinsburg, W. Va./Martinsburg), assisted by D'Amato. The score held up until the end of the frame as Mount Union added another tally to lead 2-1.
After Mount Union scored a pair of goals to open the second,
Nick Gralewski (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) answered with an unassisted goal. The back-and-forth continued as D'Amato answered another Raider goal, assisted by
Pete Schellbach (New York, N.Y./Salisbury School), making it 5-3. Each side had chances late in the half, but the score remained the same heading into halftime.
Allegheny opened the second half with a quick goal by Gralewski, assisted by
JP Rakis (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson), cutting the lead to one. Minutes later, Rakis notched his first goal, tying the game at five. Cushwa's second goal, assisted by Rakis, gave the Gators their first lead of the game with six minutes left in the third. Gralewski completed his hat trick three minutes later, pushing the lead to two goals. The Raiders added a late goal, but the Gators still led 7-6 going into the final quarter.
D'Amato scored the first goal of the fourth unassisted. Schellbach extended the lead to 9-6 on a quick shot after picking up a groundball in front of the crease.
Alex Crespo (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) made it 10-6 with his first collegiate goal with two minutes to play, sealing the win.

- Liam Kruck (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin) had a team-high six groundballs with a pair of caused turnovers.
- Garin Stearns (Hudson, Ohio/Revere) earned the win in net, making 15 saves.
