MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Opening day resulted in a pair of wins for the Allegheny College baseball team, as the Gators defended the swamp in a doubleheader against John Carroll University on Sunday at Robert M. Garbark Field.
The Gators (2-0) used a pair of four-run innings in both games to overcome early deficits and beat the Blue Streaks (0-2) by scores of 5-2 and 4-2.
Allegheny 5, John Carroll 4
Pitching was terrific throughout the day for Allegheny. After allowing two runs in the first inning,
Walker Cunningham (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) settled in and threw 5.0 frames of three-hit ball. The righty had command issues, surrendering three walks and plunking four Blue Streaks, but it had limited effects. Cunningham also struck out seven in his first start of the year.
John Doney (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) earned his first collegiate win. Coming out of the bullpen, Doney offered three innings of scoreless ball. The right-hander gave up a pair of hits while striking out as many.
Preston Pierce (Camano Island, Wash./Stanwood) slammed the door in the ninth frame to pick up his first save of the season.
The bats came alive in the seventh inning. Trailing 2-1,
Alejandro Samayoa (Katonah, N.Y./John Jay Cross River) got the Gators going with a single to right field. Two batters later,
Ryan Dougherty (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) singled up the middle and drove home pinch-runner
Grant Dowden (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) to tie the game.
JD Robinson (Round Hill, Va./Woodgrove) brought in the go-ahead run on a ground out, and Allegheny rallied for two more off the bat of
Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) and
Brady Nolin (Cumberland, Maine/Greeley).
Allegheny 4, John Carroll 2
All of the damage for Allegheny came in the bottom of the third inning. After trailing by two from a Logan Lamere sacrifice fly and an RBI double by Connor Mayle, the Gators struck for four to take the lead and finalize the day's scoring.
Dougherty swung things into action with a single into left. With two runners on, Bryant-Dawson tied the game with a double down the left-field line to score both runners. Nolin scored and took the lead for Allegheny thanks to a
Matt Jennings (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) infield single behind the second base bag.
William Wolff (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) scored the final run on a Samayoa RBI base hit.
The pitching was dominant once again.
Brent Herrmann (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) earned the win after going 6.0 innings. It was a rocky start for the southpaw, but he settled in quickly and retired nine in a row during the third, fourth, and fifth innings. The third reliever out of the bullpen, Pierce earned his second save of the day in the final frame. He allowed runners before ending the ninth with back-to-back flyouts.
