Gators Drop Doubleheader at Maryville

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Allegheny dropped a pair of road nonconference games today (March 2) versus Maryville College at Scotland Yard.

There were chances in both games for the Blue and Gold to come out on top. Ultimately, the opposition gained ground early and pulled away late.

Game 1 - Maryville 11, Allegheny 4

The Gators (2-2, 0-0 PAC) dropped the opener after falling behind early. The bats were slow early, mustering just a pair of base runners through the first five frames.

Down 5-0, Allegheny scratched two in the scoring column during the sixth inning. JD Robinson (Round Hill, Va./Woodgrove) and Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) brought home the runs.

Allegheny's chance to strike came an inning later. With the bases loaded and one out, Anthony Maslo (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) drew a nine-pitch walk to bring in another run.

Down two, the Gators grounded into an inning-ending double play — the dagger for the Gators in game one.

The Scots (3-2, 0-0 CCS) added another five runs to their total in the seventh and eighth frames, splitting the game open. Allegheny scored one in the ninth, but it was too little too late.

Mark Schweickert (Glen Allen, Va./John Randolph Tucker) took the loss after walking six in his season debut. The junior gave up a trio of runs (one earned) on five hits. The Gators hoisted four additional arms from the pen, allowing eight runs to score. It was the first game the relievers have allowed the opponents to score.

Game 2 - Maryville 6, Allegheny 5

Maryville again struck first blood in the nightcap, scoring three runs in the first two innings to take an early advantage.

The Gators earned two back in the fifth frame. Bryant-Dawson brought home a run on a fielder's choice, and the throw from the Scots' third basemen was airmailed, allowing an additional run to touch home.

Trailing by two in the seventh, Allegheny took their first lead of the series with a three spot.

Brady Nolin (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) laced a two-RBI double down the left field line to tie the contest. He later came to score on a William Wolff (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) sacrifice fly to give Allegheny a 5-4 lead.

The first two Maryville hitters reached via singles in the bottom of the frame. Two batters later, they took the lead on a single to left, scoring both runners to put the Scots ahead 6-5.

Allegheny had runners on first and third with two outs in the ninth, but nothing manifested of it.

Dawson Thomas (Conneaut, Pa./Conneaut Area) took the loss after pitching an incredible game. He allowed both base runners in the eighth inning before being yanked. But, Thomas earlier pitched out of a jam in the sixth with back-to-back strikeouts after inheriting runners at the corners with one out.

Brent Herrmann (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) threw 5.1 innings allowing four runs (three earned) while surrendering eight hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

Inside the Game 1 Box Score
  • The Gators were outhit 18 to seven by the Scots.
  • Nick Banez (Edmonds, Wash./Meadowdale) was the only Gator to reach base in every at-bat.
