MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny women's basketball team got out to a fast start as they picked up an 83-52 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win at home against Geneva Wednesday (Dec. 4).
The Gators' came out firing on all cylinders, opening the game on a 20-0 run.
Bella Antonacci (Indiana, Pa./Indiana Area) had nine points in the run while
Emily Lauer (Knox, Pa./Keystone) had seven. In the frame, the Gators forced 11 turnovers with seven steals as they entered the second quarter with a 26-8 lead.
Similar to the first quarter, the Gators opened the second on a big run, this time 15-3 before Geneva called a timeout. Allegheny hit a trio of three pointers in the run with Lauer scoring seven points while Antonacci and
Jess Bickart (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) had the other triples. The lead reached as much as 30 points multiple times as Allegheny owned a 47-21 lead at halftime.
Lauer led the Gators at the half with 14 points. Antonacci was also in double digits with 10 points and five assists. In the opening 20 minutes, the Gators were 19-of-39 (48.7%) from the floor with assists coming on 17 of the baskets. They also owned a 27-17 edge in rebounds while forcing 20 turnovers.
Allegheny went on an 11-4 run to start the second half as their lead reached 33 points, 58-25. The Golden Tornadoes responded with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 58-32 at the media timeout. After the short break, each side ended the quarter with six more points as Allegheny led 64-38 heading into the fourth.
The fourth quarter saw the Gators start the final quarter on a 9-3 run with four points coming from
Sarah Santicola (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area). Allegheny gained their highest lead of the game in the frame, 80-45, as they picked up the conference win.
Inside the Box
- Lauer led the offense with 23 points, her second straight game with 20 or more points. She also had seven rebounds and four assists.
- Antonacci had a near triple-double, finishing with 15 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and five steals.
- Ava Kobus (Pittsburgh, Pa./Norwin) had a season-high 12 points and nine rebounds with three steals.
- Bickart ended the contest with nine points, five rebounds and three assists.
- Santicola registered eight points, seven rebounds and five blocks.
- Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) had a season-high nine assists with three points.
- Kate Leach (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Analyse Rios (Orlando, Fla./Timber Creek) had four points apiece while Bella Wilson (Middletown, Md./Saint John's Catholic Prep) had three and Pascale Olczak (Plum, Pa./Plum) had two.
- The Gators shot 42.9% (33-77) from the field, assisting on a season-best 27 baskets. They also owned a 54-40 advantage in rebounds.
- Allegheny forced 28 turnovers with a season-high 14 steals.
News and Notes
- The win gives the team their first 3-0 start in conference play since the 2011-12 season when they were in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC).
- Allegheny is now 11-5 all-time against Geneva.
- The 28 point first quarter for the Gators was their highest scoring frame of the season.
