Football Defeated at No. 16/17-Ranked Carnegie Mellon

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Allegheny College football team was defeated by No. 16/17 nationally-ranked Carnegie Mellon University, 63-10, in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest on Saturday afternoon at Richard M. Lackner Field at Gesling Stadium

The Tartans, who have been ranked all season and have peaked as high as 14th in the country, remain in a three-way tie with No. 13 Grove City College and No. 19 Washington and Jefferson College for first in the PAC with matching 8-1 records.

A perennial PAC favorite, CMU began the game with 28 unanswered points in the first quarter. The high-powered Tartan offense added two more touchdowns in the second quarter and three in the third.

The Gators (1-8, 1-8 PAC) found some success moving the ball in the second half and managed to piece together one touchdown drive in the fourth quarter. After a 13-play drive ended in a blocked field goal, senior quarterback Trevor Brncic (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) and Chris Gisewhite (Corpus Christi, Texas/Flour Bluff) rebounded, leading Allegheny on a seven-play, 63-yard scoring drive late in the fourth. That included a 40-yard pass and catch to Gisewhite that gave the Gators first and goal from the one-yard line. Brncic found the junior receiver in the end zone three plays later for Allegheny's only touchdown.

Inside the Box Score
  • Brncic threw for 225 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions against the Tartans.
  • Gisewhite led all Allegheny receivers with a game-high 123 yards on 11 catches, including the fourth-quarter touchdown.
  • Allegheny's ground game failed to produce positive net yardage.
  • CMU combined for 460 yards of total offense, with 295 yards on the ground.
  • The Gator defense forced one turnover in the first quarter when senior safety Vital Joseph II (Humble, Texas/Summer Creek) picked off CMU quarterback Ben Mills in the red zone.
  • Running back Tre Vasiliadis produced a game-high 104 rushing yards with one touchdown for Carnegie Mellon.
  • Linebackers Coltin Colucci (Brewster, Ohio/Fairless) and Zach Altenbaugh (Industry, Pa./Western Beaver) had 11 and nine tackles, respectively, and each finished with one-half tackle for a loss.
  • Joseph had five tackles with one interception return for 16 yards.
  • Huriel Calice (Peabody, Mass./Phillips Academy Andover) earned three tackles with one sack from his defensive line position.
  • CMU's Logan Young had both Tartan interceptions, recovered a fumble, and was tied for the team lead with five total tackles.

News and Notes
  • In his last three starts, Brncic has amassed 891 yards with six passing touchdowns.
  • Gisewhite surpassed 100 yards receiving for the second time in three games and has at least one touchdown in back-to-back contests.
  • Joseph's three interceptions are the most by a Gator since teammate David Babb (Pembroke Pines, Fla. Chaminade Madonna) had three in the fall of 2022.
  • Colucci's 88 tackles are the most in a season since linebacker Kyle McGee '20 had 104 in 2019.
