WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Allegheny College men's soccer team earned its first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory of the season by a 2-1 score against Washington and Jefferson College on Wednesday evening at Alexandre Stadium.
The Gators (2-9-3, 1-2-2 PAC) secured the much-needed two points in the PAC standings with a strong second-half effort against the Presidents (4-7-1, 1-2-1 PAC). Allegheny scored both goals in the second half, and a highlight-reel third goal was wiped from the board as the Gator offense came to life in the final 45 minutes.
Deadlocked in a scoreless draw, the Gators nearly grabbed the lead in the 53rd minute. Like his incredible bicycle-kick goal against Waynesburg University last week,
Brady Napoleon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) spun and fired the ball past the Presidents' keeper. However, the assistant referee flagged for offsides as the Allegheny senior broke towards the goal just a second too early.
A little over five minutes later,
Will Gruca (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) found himself in a similar spot inside the penalty area. After a quick throw-in to
Jacob Kubik-Pauw (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Hanover (N.H.)) along the sideline, Kubik-Pauw sent a well-placed cross into the box as Gruca crashed towards the goal line. The wide-open midfielder simply needed to tap the ball inside the post with his right foot to put the Gators ahead by one.
Napoleon atoned for the offside call with the eventual game-winner in the 60th minute. While attempting to dribble around traffic just inside the 18-yard box, the senior from Pittsburgh was bumped to the ground and awarded a penalty kick. He rocketed a right-footed, no-doubter by a diving keeper to double Allegheny's advantage to 2-0.
Washington and Jefferson got one back in the 66th minute off the foot of Logen Mackey, but that was the only tally allowed by
Cadan Bennett (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) and the Gator defense.

- Four days removed from scoring a season-high-tying four goals at Waynesburg, W&J's offense was held to a single goal, thanks in part to the Allegheny's starting defense: leftback Kubik-Pauw, center backs Mathis Nolet-Gagne (Quebec City, Quebec, Canada/Northwood School) and Aidan Dyga (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), and right back Graham Kralic (Beaver Falls, Pa./Riverside).
- Napoleon's goal was his team-leading fifth of the year.
