ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Allegheny College men's tennis team fell in a hard-fought contest against the Rochester Institute of Technology, 4-3, Wednesday evening at the RIT Tennis Courts in Rochester, New York.
All three points won by Allegheny (2-1) came from the singles portion of the match. RIT (2-0) swept the trio of doubles matches and added wins in the sixth, fifth, and third singles matches in that order to clinch the one-point victory.
Each of the top three singles matches required a third set to determine the winner, and all three featured a tiebreak game to decide one of those three sets.
Leading 3-1, RIT earned the match-clinching point from Joel Pho in his No. 3 singles contest against
Levente Mihaly (Békéscsaba, Hungary/Békéscsabai SZC Széchenyi István). Although Mihaly took a one-set lead by winning a tiebreak game, Pho rallied from behind to secure the deciding point by taking the second set, 6-4, and third set, 6-2.
Anton Hedlund (Hovas, Sweden/Katrinelundsgymnasiet) battled Yu Tanimoto in the No. 1 singles match, winning the first and third sets with identical scores of 6-4. In the No. 2 spot,
David Rodriguez (St. Ann's, Trinidad & Tobago/Fatima College) overcame a first-set loss to sweep the second, 6-0, before completing the comeback in the third, 7-6 (5).
