Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Beats Wooster in Double Overtime, 2-1

WOOSTER, Ohio -- It took more than 76 minutes of game time, but the Allegheny College field hockey team completed the comeback on Wednesday night and defeated the College of Wooster in double overtime, 2-1.

It's the second time in as many games that Allegheny (4-10, 4-3 NCAC) needed the final moments of the fourth quarter and overtime to secure the win. The Gators were held off the scoreboard for more than 58 minutes, but converted the last penalty corner of regulation to force overtime.

Maddy Keenan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Trafford) scored the game-tying goal with 1:36 left in the fourth quarter in a frantic and chaotic sequence of events. Jenna Cassani (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonskee) inserted the corner to Caroline Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) at the top of the arc, and Smith's initial shot was saved by Wooster (3-7, 1-5 NCAC) goalie Cate Barkdoll. Keenan whiffed at the rebound, and her follow up went wide left. Cassani prevented the ball from going out of bounds and centered it back to Samantha Mura (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit), and her first attempt was saved by Barkdoll as well. But with the goalie out of position after diving to poke away Mura's shot, Keenan regathered the ball and fired it into the back of the cage from about seven yards out.

The Allegheny offense put significant pressure on Barkdoll and the Fighting Scot defense in the first overtime. The Gators earned three penalty corners and recorded seven shots in a span of two-and-a-half minutes, but they needed one more corner in double overtime to seal the win. Jamie Marchewka (Buffalo, N.Y./Amherst Central) took a swing from the left side of the arc, which was redirected into the cage by Cassani for the game-winner.
