RICHMOND, Ind. – A pair of clutch goals by
Caroline Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) led the Allegheny field hockey team to a 3-2 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) victory at Earlham Sunday (Oct. 13).
Midway through the first quarter, the Quakers got on the board following a penalty quarter. That goal proved to be the only one in the opening thirty minutes as Earlham held a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The Quakers once again took advantage of a penalty corner early in the second half, resulting in their second goal of the game.
The Gators cut the deficit in half in the closing minutes of the third. After a scrum near the goal,
Megan Seymour (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) emerged with the ball and found the back of the net. The goal marked the first of her career.
The score stayed that way until the end of the fourth. With seconds remaining, the Gators earned a penalty corner.
Jenna Cassani (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonskee) inserted the attempt to Smith. Smith quickly ripped a shot past the goalie, sending the game into overtime.
The Gators needed just a few minutes in the extra session to find the winning strike. About three minutes in, Smith took the ball away from a Quaker near the goal and quickly took a shot that went past the goalie to give the Gators the overtime win.
