MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College men's tennis team could not keep up with a formidable opponent from Division II Edinboro University on Monday evening, as the Fighting Scots earned a 9-0 victory over the Gators at the Robertson Athletic Complex.
Edinboro, coming off of an 18-win season, a run to the NCAA Division II Regionals, and a ranking as the third-best team in the Atlantic Region, proved to be as good as advertised against the Gators. Even still, Allegheny fought valiantly at the top of the doubles and singles lineups.
The team of
Anton Hedlund (Hovas, Sweden/Katrinelundsgymnasiet) and
David Rodriguez (St. Ann's, Trinidad and Tobago/Fatima College) competed against Bruno Sabio and Rocco Palombarini, who finished last spring ranked as the fourth-best duo in the Atlantic Region. Hedlund and Rodriguez won six games, the most of any Gator tandem, against Edinboro's best pair.
At No. 1 singles, Hedlund battled Gordan Fran Mileusnic, a first-year player from Slovenia, and gave him a run for his money with identical set scores of 7-5.
