SANDUSKY, Ohio – The Allegheny volleyball team opened their season with a pair of matches at the 2023 Great Lakes Crossover Friday (Sept. 1) in Ohio.
The Gators opened with a 3-0 sweep of host Heidelberg before falling to Ohio Northern 3-0.
Allegheny 3, Heidelberg 0 (25-20, 25-9, 25-10)
Midway through the opening set, a 5-1 run by the Gators gave them their largest lead, 16-10. Following a timeout, Heidelberg went on a run of their own, tying the set at 19 apiece. After trading points, the Gators ended the set on a 5-0 run, capped off by a
Dagney Javes (Frederick, Colo./Dawson School).
The momentum carried over to set two. After some back-and-forth play to begin, the Gators went on several big runs, including a 9-2 run to end the set, winning 25-9. The Gators tallied five aces in the set while they hit .353.
Leading 3-2 early in the third set, the Gators put the match out of reach as they rattled off eight straight points. Heidelberg was able to stave off a handful of match points before
Emma Chambers (Stoutsville, Ohio/Amanda Clearcreek) ended the match with a kill.
Inside the Box
- Jacy Diaz (Barranquitas, Puerto Rico/Gallatin (Tenn.)) tied the school record for aces in a three-set match with eight, equaling Amanda Bancroft's record from 2007. Additionally, Diaz had a team-high 15 digs.
- Chambers led the Gators with 13 kills on 23 attempts, a hitting percentage of .565.
- Angelee Bawek (Goodyear, Ariz./Estrella Foothills totaled eight digs and seven kills in her first collegiate match.
- Skyler Fatola (Queen Creek, Ariz./Eastmark) had six kills in her first match while Javes had five.
- Izzy Gray (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) and Megan Robare (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) had 13 assists each. Gray was also second on the team with nine assists.
- The Gators achieved a .308 hitting percentage while also serving up 21 aces.
Ohio Northern 3, Allegheny 0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-19)
The teams were even throughout the majority of the opening set until the Polar Bears ended it on a 5-2 run. The second set was even early as well, but a 7-0 run midway through put it out of reach for the Gators as Ohio Northern moved ahead, 2-0.
The final set once again proved to be a close one. Tied at 18 apiece, the Polar Bears went on a 7-1 run to capture the match.
Inside the Box
- Chambers led the Gators once more with 11 kills.
- Javes and Bawek had six kills apiece while Sydney Kirk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) and Fatola had four apiece.
- Gray added 12 assists.
- Diaz led the Gators with eight digs.
- Fatola also tallied four blocks.
