SANDUSKY, Ohio – The Allegheny volleyball team concluded play at the 2023 Great Lakes Crossover on Saturday (Sept. 2), splitting a pair of matches against Carroll and Trine.
The Gators fell to Carroll in four sets before bouncing back to defeat Trine ins five sets.
Carroll 3, Allegheny 1 (18-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-23)
The Gators broke open a close opening set with a 7-0 run, jumping to a 12-6 lead. They were able to maintain that lead the rest of the way as they won the opening set.
The Pioneers utilized several small runs in the second and staved off a late Gator run to even up the match. The momentum from the set two win carried over to the third set as Carroll started on an 8-0, taking the set 25-14 to move ahead.
Trailing by one, 6-5, in the final set, the Gators went on a 10-0 run to gain control. However, the Pioneers would answer with a 7-0 run later on to tie the set at 17. The back-and-forth continued as the teams were tied at 23. Carroll would go on to win the final two points, sealing the 3-1 win.
Inside the Box
- Angelee Bawek (Goodyear, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) led the Gators with 14 kills while also tallying seven digs and three aces.
- Emma Chambers (Stoutsville, Ohio/Amanda Clearcreek) had 13 kills.
- Sydney Kirk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) had five kills while Dagney Javes (Frederick, Colo./Dawson School) had four.
- Jacy Diaz (Barranquitas, Puerto Rico/Gallatin (Tenn.)) led the team with 19 digs.
- Duru Akbas (Ankara, Turkey/Layton Christian Academy (Utah)) had 13 digs.
- Izzy Gray (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) had 16 assists and nine digs while Meagan Robare (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) totaled 14 assists.
- Alejandra Fernandez (Caguas, Puerto Rico/Commonwealth Parkville) served four aces.
Allegheny 3, Trine 2 (25-18, 25-21, 19-25, 19-25, 15-10)
Trine held a slight 10-8 lead in the first set before the Gators strung together a 9-2 run. After that run, the lead never dropped below four as Allegheny took the opening set, 25-18.
Similar to the opening set, the teams were even midway through until the Gators went on a 6-0 run to gain a 24-18 advantage. Trine won three straight points before a Kirk kill ended the set.
The Thunder brought the match to 2-1 with a win in the third set, propelled by a 6-0 run midway through. Trine kept the momentum in the fourth set, winning it 25-19 and forcing a fifth set.
The Gators jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the deciding set. The Thunder brought it within one point, 6-5, but the Gators responded with a 6-2 to regain momentum. Leading 14-10, Chambers sealed the five set win with a kill.
Inside the Box
- Chambers was one of four Gators with 10 or more kills, finishing with 13.
- Javes went for 11 kills and six digs.
- Bawek had a double-double with 11 digs and 10 kills.
- Kirk also finished with 10 kills.
- Akbas had five digs and five aces.
- Robare notched 22 assists while Gray had 12.
- Diaz led the team with 17 digs while Fernandez had nine.
