Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Drops 2023 Opener at Oberlin, 2-0

OBERLIN, Ohio -- Senior goalie Kari May (Erie, Pa./McDowell) made a game-high 11 saves, but it wasn't enough for the Allegheny College women's soccer team in a 2-0 season-opening loss at Oberlin College on Friday night.

The Oberlin (1-0) offense finished with a significant advantage in shots, 25-to-7, and May did all she could to keep the Yeowomen at bay. Although she kept the Yeowomen off the scoreboard for the final 76 minutes, a red-hot start allowed Oberlin to take the two-goal lead on back-to-back tallies from Zoe Garver.

.Allegheny's (0-1) offense was able to quicken its pace in the second half. In the early moments of the second half, Emma Miller (Elyria, Ohio/Lake Ridge Academy) ripped a right-footed from nearly 25 yards out, but the ball sailed just wide of its target. Katherine Surdykowski (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington County Regional) had a few looks at the net, including a header off of a long inbounds throw from Miller and a shot that nearly spoiled the clean sheet in the closing minutes, but she wasn't unable to find the back of the net in her collegiate debut.

Inside the Box Score
  • Oberlin scored both of its goals in the first 14 minutes of Friday's contest.
  • The Yeowomen outshot the Gators, 25-to-7, but the margin was only 8-to-5 in the second half.
  • Both teams took seven corner kicks.
  • Surdykowski, a first-year midfielder, had the most scoring opportunities with a team-high three shots in her first-ever game as a Gator.
  • May stopped 11 of 13 shots on goal and held the Yeowomen scoreless in the final 76 minutes.

News and Notes
  • Friday's game was Allegheny's first trip to Oberlin, a former North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) rival, since October 15, 2019.
  • Despite the loss, the Gators are 1-1-2 against Oberlin in their last four meetings dating back to 2018.
  • May made 11 saves, tied for the second-most in a game in her career.
  • Allegheny's starting lineup included three first-year student-athletes: Surdykowski, Karley Johnson (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community), and Olivia Wilson (Mars, Pa./Mars).
