Men’s Soccer Falls in Opener to Nazareth

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny men's soccer team opened their 2023 campaign at home against Nazareth, falling to the Golden Flyers 3-1 Friday (Sept. 1).

The Golden Flyers got on the board in the 18th minute when Jake Pawlika found Noah Malta inside the box for the goal. The lead grew to 2-0 when Nazareth scored on an Allegheny own goal in the 25th minute.

The Gators got on the board less than a minute later when they were awarded a penalty kick. Gunnar Brettell (Steubenville, Ohio/Indian Creek) converted the attempt with a shot to the right side, low corner, cutting the lead to 2-1. Both teams had chances over the remainder of the half but the score remained 2-1 at halftime.

Nazareth extended the lead early in the second half when Pawlika struck off a long throw-in to make it 3-1.
