Baseball splits PAC twinbill at Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Allegheny baseball team split a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games at Grove City Saturday (April 8), defeating the Wolverines 7-6 in game one before falling 8-3 in game two.

Game One – Allegheny 7, Grove City 6

The Gators got to work early, plating three runs in the first. They started the game with three straight singles from Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)), Ryan Dougherty (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and Sullivan Schueltz (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley). Bryant-Dawson would score the game's first run on a wild pitch. A Brady Nolin (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) groundout brought Dougherty home before Schuletz scored off an error to make it 3-0.

The Wolverines brought the lead down to 3-2 in the third as they came across the plate twice, taking advantage of a hit-by-pitch and a pair of hits.

It was not long after that the Gators extended their advantage as they had another three run inning in the fourth. After a walk and a hit-by-pitch to start the inning, Seth Reisman (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) doubled to left center, driving in Matt Jennings (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) and Nick Banez (Edmonds, Wash./Meadowdale). Later in the inning, Reisman scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-2.

Conor Deasy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) started on the mound for the Gators, pitching the first five innings. He allowed two runs while striking out seven.

The Gators tacked on one more run in the sixth as a Dougherty sac fly scored Chase Chodkowski (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West).

The Wolverines fought back once more. They answered the Gators' run in the sixth with one of their own before adding three runs in the seventh to make it 7-6.

WIth the game close, Hunter Lohr (Bowdoinham, Maine/Mount Ararat) entered for the final 2.2 innings of play. The senior allowed just two hits while striking out a pair to earn the save and seal the PAC victory.

Game Two – Grove City 8, Allegheny 3

Game two remained scoreless until the fourth inning when the Wolverines utilized five hits and a Gator error to score five runs.

The Gators made up some ground in the fifth. Bryant-Dawson reached first via an error and stole second and third. A Shueltz sacrifice fly allowed him to come home and narrow the gap to 5-1.

Allegheny added another run in the sixth. Jennings was hit by a pitch to start the frame and moved to third on a Banez double before scoring on a CHodkowski sac fly. However, the Wolverines would score twice in the bottom of the frame to move their lead to 7-2.

A Banez triple would score Nolin in the eighth, but the Wolverines answered with a run in the bottom of the frame and kept the Gators off the bases in the ninth to earn the split.
