Baseball Nicked By La Roche in Extra Innings

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The visiting Redhawks from La Roche University earned an extra-inning non-conference victory over Allegheny College baseball on Tuesday, as the Gators were edged by a 2-1 final score on a warm and sunny afternoon at Robert M. Garbark Field.

The contest began as a pitcher's duel, as Allegheny (10-12) starter Mark Schweickert (Glen Allen, Va./John Randolph Tucker) and La Roche (9-13) lefty Chris Tarquinio filled the scoreboard with zeros. Schweickert allowed only one hit and struck out a game-best nine batters in 7.0 scoreless innings of work. On the other hand, Tarquinio received a no-decision after giving up one run on four hits in 8.0 innings for the Red Hawks.

The game's first run wasn't scored until the top of the ninth, when Kyle Weitzel hit a two-out solo home run over the wall in left center. In the bottom half of the ninth, Andrew Stablewski (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate) came up with a clutch pinch-hit double that plated Sullivan Schueltz (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) and forced extras.

With several important Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games coming up, the Gators elected to save their pitchers and use third baseman Antonio Rios (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) and outfielder Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) to finish the game on the mound. Although both were able to record a strikeout in the non-traditional role, the Redhawks loaded the bases and scored the game-winning run in the top of the 10th inning on a wild pitch.

Brady Nolin (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) led off the bottom of the 10th with a base hit, but the Gators stranded the tying run in scoring position.
