Baseball Breaks Out the Bats in Sweep of Bethany

BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Allegheny College baseball team was victorious in both games of a twin bill versus Bethany College on Wednesday afternoon. Each contest saw Allegheny produce solid run totals, as the Gators won by scores of 8-3 and 22-10.

With the pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) wins, the Gators (12-12) have now won six of their last eight games.

Allegheny 8, Bethany 3
The bats were hot from the jump, as Andrew Stablewski (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Academy) put the first runs on the board with a two-RBI double out to left field in the top of the first inning. Anthony Maslo (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) also tallied an RBI single, scoring Chase Chodkowski (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) to give Allegheny a 3-1 lead after the first two frames.

In the fifth inning, Brady Nolin (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) launched a solo shot over the left field wall for his second home run of the season. Nolin finished game one with a 2-for-5 performance at the dish, including another RBI that he claimed the next inning.

The Bison (14-12) attempted a comeback in the home half of the sixth and began a two-out rally thanks to base hits from Devin Toothman, Derek Black, and Colton Stoneman. However, they were only able to muster two runs, and the offense came to a halt after Garrett Senchur (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) came out of the pen and shut things down in relief of Brent Herrmann (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield), who threw for 6.1 innings.

Senchur would end up going the rest of the way and gave up just one hit while striking out two. In his sixth appearance of the season, the 6-foot-5 right-hander is becoming a dominant relief pitcher for the staff. He has allowed just two runs in 6.1 innings pitched on the season, which both came in his first outing.

Allegheny 22, Bethany 10
The Gators exploded in the top of the second inning, totaling seven hits and eight runs while capitalizing with runners in scoring position.

Jonathan Sharp (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) drove home the first run with a sac fly in foul territory, scoring Matt Jennings (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice). The next seven Gators would reach base safely, six of them via hits, which included a double from Maslo and a triple from Jennings.

The Gators scored two more in the third inning after a pair of RBIs from a single off the bat of Sullivan Schueltz (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley). After coming into the series with a .348 batting average, Schueltz continued to swing lights out, hitting 5-for-8 for both games with six RBIs.

After already committing an error in the second, five more by the Bison defense helped the Gators register 14 additional runs throughout the rest of the afternoon. Bethany let up one error in the third and two a piece in the sixth and ninth innings.

If the Allegheny lead was not safe enough already, the team put together their second eight-run inning in the top of the ninth. The Gators strung together another six hits, with RBIs coming from Brayden Cartwright (New Castle, Pa./New Castle), Antonio Rios (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison), and Ty Aldridge (Haward, Calif./Moreau Catholic).

The Bison accumulated four runs of their own in the ninth, but it was not nearly enough to mount any sort of comeback.
