Late heroics lift Gators to PAC sweep

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Allegheny softball team utilized a pair of seventh inning rallies to secure two Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victories Friday (April 7), defeating Chatham in a doubleheader, 3-2 and 8-6.

Game One – Allegheny 3, Chatham 2

The Cougars struck first, taking advantage of a triple in the opening inning to jump ahead, 1-0.

In the fourth, Olivia Devries (Kent, Ohio/Field) hit the Gators' first triple of the season to the right center gap with two outs. However, the Cougars got out of the inning without allowing Devries to cross the plate.

The Gators tied the game in the fifth. Isabelle Wakefield (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) and Halle Book (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) both reached on errors. Cameron Long (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) would drive Wakefield in on a fielder's choice, tying the game at one apiece. However, the Cougars hit a solo home run in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead.

Trailing 2-1 in the top of the seventh, Book was issued a lead-off walk. Aleya Belardinelli (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) moved her up on a sac bunt. The Cougars recorded outs on the next two batters, leaving Sophia Godzak (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) at the dish with two outs. Godzak came through, delivering a RBI double to deep center, tying the game. Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) followed up with her own double to deep center, scoring Godzak and giving the Gators their first lead of the evening, 3-2.

Belardinelli struck out the first batter in the bottom of the seventh before the Cougars reached first on an infield single. However, Chatham popped up a bunt which catcher Long caught and threw down to Genareo at first for the game-ending double play.

  • Devries also delivered a multi-hit game, registering the Gators' first triple of the year.

Game Two – Allegheny 8, Chatham 6

After a scoreless first inning, the Cougars had a big second, scoring five runs on six hits to take the lead.

The Gators made up some ground in the fourth inning. After Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) walked, Devries hit a ground rule double. Hadley Horensky (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) and Samantha Dzierba (Colden, N.Y./Orchard Park) then hit back-to-back singles which scored Phillips and Devries, cutting the lead to 5-3.

Godzak led off the fifth with a double before Genareo tripled, scoring Godzak. Phillips then singled to right field, scoring Genareo and tying the game at five.

Allegheny took their first lead in the sixth when Long hit a two-out solo shot to center field. The home run marked her fifth of the season. However, a bases loaded sacrifice fly by the Cougars tied the game up once again in the bottom of the frame.

Genareo led off the seventh with a single down the left field line, with Book entering to pinch run. Book moved up a base on a Phillips sacrifice bunt. This time, Devries delivered the clutch hit, singling through the left side of the infield to score Book and put the Gators ahead, 7-6. Horensky kept the offense going, tripling to center field and scoring Devries.

The Cougars would put a runner in scoring position during the seventh, but Dzierba ended the game with a swinging strike out, securing the doubleheader sweep.
