Softball extends win streak to six with PAC sweep

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny softball team increased their winning streak to six games as they swept Franciscan in a President's Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader Tuesday (April 11), winning game one 12-4 and game two 15-2.

Game One – Allegheny 12, Franciscan 4 (5 innings)

After Aleya Belardinelli (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) struck out the side in the top of the first, Sophia Godzak (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) got the Gators on the board in the bottom of the frame. Godzak belted her second home run of the year over the left field fence with two outs to put the Gators on the board. After Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) was walked, Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) hit her first collegiate home run over the left center fence, making it 3-0.

Belardinelli continued to pitch well as her consecutive strikeout tally hit five before the Barons put a ball in play. Godzak delivered her second RBI of the day in the second, driving in Halle Book (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic). A dropped fly ball allowed Cameron Long (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) and Godzak to score before a Phillips double brought Genareo home, making it 7-0.

The Barons made up some ground in the third, scoring four runs on four hits including a three-run home run, cutting the lead to 7-4.

The Gators answered with four runs on two outs in the bottom of the frame. Long drove Belardinelli home for the first run. A Godzak double then scored Long from first. Genareo followed up with her own RBI double. Phillips drove in the final run of the frame with a single, making it 11-4.

Hadley Horensky (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) led off the fourth with a triple down the left field line. Isabelle Wakefield (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) drove her in with a single to left field, bringing the lead to 12-4.
