MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny softball team extended their win streak to eight games as they swept Pitt Bradford in a nonconference doubleheader Wednesday (April 12), winning game one 4-0 and game two 8-0.
Game One – Allegheny 4, Pitt Bradford 0
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth.
Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) doubled to the right center fence before
Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) doubled to the opposite gap, putting runners at second and third. An infield single by
Hadley Horensky (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) allowed Genareo to come home for the game's first run.
Isabelle Wakefield (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) then singled for the second time, scoring Phillips to make it 2-0.
The Gators added to the lead in the fifth. After
Cameron Long (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) earned a walk and stole second, Genareo's second double of the day brought Long home, taking the lead to 3-0.
Olivia Devries (Kent, Ohio/Field) doubled in the sixth and moved up on a sac bunt. Wakefield drove her home on a groundout, increasing the lead to 4-0.
Those runs were more than enough for
Aleya Belardinelli (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore). The sophomore pitcher allowed just two hits in the complete game shutout while striking out 12 to earn the win.
Inside the Box
- Belardinelli earned her 11th win of the season. In the complete game shutout, she allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out 12. This marks her sixth game this season with 10 or more strikeouts and her fourth shutout.
- Wakefield had a pair of hits while driving in two runs.
- Genareo drove in a run on a pair of doubles.
- Horensky drove in a run on an infield single.
- Long, Phillips and Devries all doubled.
- Eva Dillaman (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) and Belardinelli also delivered hits.
Game Two – Allegheny 8, Pitt Bradford 0 (5 innings)
The Gators strung together four straight singles with two outs in the first to take the lead.
Sophia Godzak (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon), Genareo and Phillips loaded the bases. Devries' infield single brought Godzak home as the Gators gained a 1-0 advantage.
The Panthers loaded the bases in the fourth with one out, but
Jordan Williams (San Diego, Calif./Academy of Our Lady of Peace) was able to get the Gators out of the frame unscathed.
Williams was walked to start the bottom of the frame.
Halle Book (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) entered to pinch run. After moving to third on a Wakefield single, Belardinelli drove her home to make it 2-0.
Genareo hit a lead-off single in the fifth and moved around to third on an error, placing Phillips at second. Devries was intentionally walked, loading the bases. Dillaman, a pinch hitter, was walked, allowing Genareo to score for the third run. A wild pitch scored Phillips. After another walk, Wakefield hit a two RBI single through the right side, making it 6-0. After a Belardinelli sac bunt, Long ended the game early with a two RBI double to deep center.
Inside the Box
- Williams tallied her first career shutout, allowing five hits and one walk. She moves to 2-1 on the season.
- Four Gators had multi-hit games, Godzak, Genareo, Devries and Wakefield. Each of them crossed the plate once while Wakefield drove in two runs and Devries drove in one.
- Long drove in a pair of runs on her game-ending double.
- Phillips had a hit while Dillaman and Belardinelli had a RBI.
