MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny softball team's win streak reached nine games with a 8-0 win in game one against Grove City, but the Gators dropped game two 5-1 in extra innings, splitting the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader Saturday (April 15).
In between the games, the Gators honored junior
Isabelle Wakefield (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek), who will be graduating early this December.
Game One – Allegheny 8, Grove City 0 (6 innings)
Halle Book (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) led off the third with a single to right field.
Aleya Belardinelli (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) moved her up on a sac bunt before
Sophia Godzak (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) delivered a RBI double, cracking the scoreboard.
Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) reached on an error, putting runners on the corners for
Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon). Phillips singled to right field, scoring Godzak.
Olivia Devries (Kent, Ohio/Field) ripped a double down the left field line, bringing both Genareo and Phillips and taking the score to 4-0.
The Gators added to their lead in the fourth inning. Wakefield singled to right center. A hard hit double by
Cameron Long (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) brought her home, increasing the lead to 5-0.
Genareo doubled to start the fifth.
Maley Gleason (Houston, Texas/Westside) pinch ran for her. Phillips followed up with a single to right field before
Hadley Horensky (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) drove Gleason in with a hit to deep center.
Allegheny ended the game early in the sixth inning. A double by Long, followed by one from Godzak made it 7-0. Genareo provided the game-ending hit, plating Long for the 8-0 win.
Inside the Box
- Belardinelli earned the win in the circle. In 6.0, she allowed no runs or walks on four hits while striking out five. It marks her fifth shutout of the year and second straight this week. She moves to 12-1 on the year.
- Long and Godzak hit two doubles each with Godzak driving two in.
- Genareo and Phillips also had two hits, with one of Genareo's being a double.
- Devries drove in two runs on a double.
- Wakefield, Horensky and Book also registered hits.
Game Two – Grove City 5, Allegheny 1 (8 innings)
The Wolverines started the game with back-to-back hits, but
Samantha Dzierba (Colden, N.Y./Orchard Park) was able to get the Gators out of the jam unscathed.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth when the Wolverines used three hits to get one run across.
The Gators responded in the bottom of the frame. Long led off with a single and moved up on a sac bunt by Godzak. A base hit by Genareo put runners on the corners. Book pinch ran for Genareo and stole second. A walk to Phillips loaded the base for Devries. A throwing error allowed Long to score, tying the game. However, the Wolverines were able to get out of the inning without surrendering another run.
After holding Grove City off in the top of the seventh, Long delivered a two-out double in the bottom of the frame. However, they were unable to bring Long home as the game went to extra innings.
In the eighth, the Wolverines took advantage of a pair errors while tallying four hits to score four runs.
The Gators were held at-bay in the bottom frame, as their nine game winning streak ended in extra innings.

- Long had a multi-hit game with a double.
