WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Allegheny softball team swept for the third time at The Spring Games on Thursday (March 9), defeating Chicago Concordia 7-6 in extra innings before rallying to defeat previously undefeated Dominican 5-4 in game two.
Game 1 - Allegheny 7, Concordia Chicago 6 (8 innings)
In the second inning,
Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) was hit by a pitch before
Olivia Devries (Kent, Ohio/Field) singled to right center. After
Anna Castlevetere (Clarence, N.Y./Nardin Academy) entered to run for Genareo,
Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) singled down the right field line, bringing Castlevetere across for the game's first run.
Hadley Horensky (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) followed up with a sac fly to center, scoring Devries to make it 2-0.
However, the Cougars scored four runs in the bottom of the second as they jumped ahead, 4-2.
The Gators made up the runs in the top of the third.
Aleya Belardinelli (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) reached on a fielding error.
Sophia Godzak (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) singled to move the runner up. After a deep flyout, Devries singled once more, scoring Belardinelli and cutting the lead to 4-3.
Cameron Long (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) was walked to load the bases. Phillips once again delivered another RBI, scoring a pinch running
Maley Gleason (Houston, Texas/Westside) to tie the game.
Horensky led off the fourth with a single and moved to third on an
Audrey Blarr (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) sac bunt and a
Halle Book (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) infield single. On a double steal, Horensky came across the plate, putting Allegheny back in the lead. But once again, the Cougars responded with a run in the bottom of the frame to tie it up again.
Neither team was able to produce a run in the sixth or seventh, sending the game into extra innings.
Devries started the eighth on second. Long opened with a bunt, reaching safely and moving up to second on the play. Phillips was walked to load the bases for Horensky. Horensky belted a shot to the outfield, scoring Devries and Long to put the Gators in front, 7-5
The Cougars scored the initial runner at second base on a sacrifice fly to cut it to 7-6. Concordia Chixago had a pair of hits to put runners at first and second, but
Samantha Dzierba (Colden, N.Y./Orchard Park) struck out the final two batters as the Gators were victorious.
Inside the Box
- Dzierba earned the win in relief, going 6.1 innings with six strikeouts.
- Horensky led the Gators with three RBI on two hits with a run scored.
- Phillips drove in two runs on two hits.
- Devries also had a multi-hit game with two runs scored and a RBI.
- Book, Belardinell, Godzak and Long also tallied hits
Game 2 - Allegheny 5, Dominican (Ill.) 4
After a scoreless first inning, the Stars put up two runs apiece in the second and third innings.
The Gators made up a run in the fourth. Godzak reached first on an error. Castlevetere entered to pinch run, and took second on a wild pitch. Genareo smacked a double to the left center fence, bringing Castlevetere around, cutting the lead down to three. Phillips hit a two-out single, but Dominican got out of the jam without allowing another run across.
The Gator bats came alive in the fifth.
Isabelle Wakefield (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) led off with a single. After an error, Book singled on a bunt. Later with the bases loaded, Devries was issued a walk, scoring Wakefield. Long would then single, allowing Godzak to score and narrowing the gap to 5-4. After that, Phillips followed up with a two RBI single, plating Genareo and Devries to put the Gators in front, 6-5.
Starting pitcher Belardinelli did not allow a baserunner in either the sixth or seventh as the Gators handed the Stars their first loss of the season.
Inside the Box
- Phillips led the Gators with two hits and two runs driven in.
- Genareo and Long had a hit and a RBI each while Devries also drove a run home.
- Book, Godzak and Wakefield also had hits.
- Belardinelli earned the win in the circle, pitching all seven innings with three strikeouts. At the plate, she had a multi-hit game.

- Today's games were the program's first against Concordia Chicago and Dominican.
- The Gators move to 8-2 on the year. It's the earliest in the season they have won eight games since 2012.
