Softball concludes play at The Spring Games

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Allegheny softball team concluded their trip to The Spring Games in Florida, falling in a pair of games Friday (March 10).
 
The Gators fell to Wisconsin River Falls 4-2 in game one and to Carnegie Mellon 5-0 in game two.
 
Game 1 - River Falls 4, Allegheny 2
 
The Falcons loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first, but the Gators surrendered just one run as Jordan Williams (San Diego, Calif./Academy of Our Lady of Peace) struck out two of the next three batters. Allegheny threatened in the bottom of the frame as Aleya Belardinelli (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) started the inning with a hit, but the Falcons were able to hold the Gators at bay.
 
River Falls took advantage of a miscue in the second, adding one more to double the lead. 
 
In the bottom of the frame, Olivia Devries (Kent, Ohio/Field) singled up the middle and advanced to third on a sac bunt and a passed ball. Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) drove Devries home on a groundout, cutting the lead to 2-1. However, the Falcons continued their trend by plating one more in the top of the third to move the lead to two runs once more.
 
Sophia Godzak (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) was walked to start the fourth. Anna Castlevetere (Clarence, N.Y./Nardin Academy) entered as a pinch runner. A Cameron Long (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) single moved Castlevetere to third. Phillips delivered a RBI once again with a shot to center field, plating Castlevetere. 
 
In the fifth, the Falcons once again scored a run as their lead went back to two, 4-2.
 
Unfortunately, the Gators were unable to produce another run as they fell to River Falls by two runs.
 
Inside the Box
  • Bellardinelli had a multi-hit game at the plate. In relief of Williams, she struck out three in five innings, allowing just two hits and no earned runs.
  • Phillips drove in the two Gator runs.
  • Long and Devries also tallied hits.
  • Behind the plate, Long threw out a runner trying to steal second. 
Game 2 - Carnegie Mellon 5, Allegheny 0
 
Belardinelli reached base on an error to start the second game.After Long was walked, Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) singled through the left side the load the bases, however, the Tartans got out of the jam unscathed.
 
The game remained scoreless until the third. The Tartans tallied three hits in the frame that resulted in a pair of runs.
 
The Gators threatened again in the fourth with hits by Phillips and Belardinelli, but Carnegie Mellon got out of the jam once again.
 
Carnegie Mellon added two more runs in the fourth to make it 4-0 before tacking on one more in the fifth.
 
Allegheny was unable to bring a run across the plate as they fell to the Tartans to end their spring break trip.
 
Inside the Box
  • For the second time on the day, Long caught a runner trying to steal second.
  • Samantha Dzierba (Colden, N.Y./Orchard Park) started for the Gators, striking out a pair of Tartans.
  • Belardinelli, Genareo and Phillips provided the hits for the Gators. 
News and Notes
  • The Gators conclude their trip with an 8-4 record.
  • Today marked the Gators first game against Wisconsin River Falls.

The Gators return back north and head to Denison for a doubleheader on March 18.
