TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Allegheny College baseball team split a doubleheader against Gustavus Adolphus College on Wednesday evening with a 14-13 walk-off win in the early game and a 6-1 loss in the nightcap.
Allegheny 14, Gustavus Adolphus 13
The first half of the two-game set against the Golden Gusties (0-2) was a high-scoring, back-and-forth affair that saw the two sides combine for 27 runs and 38 hits. Although the Gators (3-6) took an early 4-0 lead, they needed some late-inning magic to pull out the victory.
Trailing 12-9 in the bottom of the seventh,
Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) provided one of the biggest swings of the young 2023 campaign with a two-out, three-run home run to even the score. After Gustavus Adolphus scored once in the top of the eighth,
William Wolff (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast) tied the game at 13-all with a two-out, pinch-hit RBI single.
With runners on the corners,
Matt Jennings (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) found the hole between third and short, which allowed Bryant-Dawson to trot home from third for the walk-off victory.
Bobby Kusinsky (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford) was the winning pitcher of record for Allegheny. After making a fantastic start in his last appearance on the bump, Kusinsky was called out of the bullpen to preserve the tie in the top of the ninth. With two runners in scoring position, the senior righty fanned Connor Wiberg for a clutch third out.
Gustavus Adolphus 6, Allegheny 1
After runs were scored in bunches in the first game, starters
Mark Schweickert (Glen Allen, Va./John Randolph Tucker) and Luke Siegle engaged in a pitcher's duel through four innings in the late matchup. Although both had to dance around trouble at various times, they traded zeros until the bottom of the fifth.
In an inning that saw the Gusties plate all six of their runs, Gavin Baker was responsible for the knockout punch. The junior shortstop was the first to face
Reid Passauer (Covington, La. /Archbishop Hannan) with the bases loaded, and he rudely welcomed the Allegheny reliever into the game with a grand slam.
Brady Nolin (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) drove in one run in the sixth, but the base knock was only the second of the night for Allegheny, and Gustavus southpaw Adam Biewen held the Gators scoreless in the seventh.
