Baseball Drops 7-5 Decision to Bethany Lutheran

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Allegheny College baseball was haunted by several miscues on Thursday afternoon at the Kino Sports Complex, as the Gators gave up six unearned runs in a 7-5 loss to Bethany Lutheran College.

Allegheny (3-7), which outhit Bethany Lutheran (3-4) 9-to-6 and stranded 10 runners on base, committed four errors. The fatal mistake proved to be a two-out, bases-loaded bobble at second base in the top of the fifth. Not only did a run score on the play, but the Vikings also received a bases-clearing three-run double from Brent Fowler in the next at-bat, as Bethany Lutheran jumped ahead 6-2.

The Gators did their best to claw from behind in the home half of the fifth. After loading the bases with nobody out, Brayden Cartwright (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) earned an RBI with a base on balls, Hunter Lohr (Bowdoinham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) poked a sac fly into center field, and Ryan Dougherty (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) drove in a run with an RBI single. However, a messy play on a line drive off the bat of Sullivan Schueltz (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) brought the fifth to an untimely end.

Amidst the confusion to determine whether or not the Bethany Lutheran center fielder, Liam Peterson, caught the ball for the second out of the inning, Cartwright thought he tagged up and scored the tying run properly, while Dougherty ended up at third. However, the umps ruled that Cartwright left second base early after the Vikings appealed the call.

In the bottom of the ninth, back-to-back walks brought the game-winning run to the plate for the Gators. Alas, a failed sac bunt attempt, a line out to center, and a strikeout left the tying runs on base.
